Plaistow Astronomy Night

Sunday 22nd October 2023

What's it all about?

Following last year, when clouds put paid to seeing anything astronomical, we thought it only right to give it another go.  The event aims to celebrate our dark skies here in rural Sussex, and provide an introduction to what is up there at this time of year.

Whilst a few telescopes will be present and trained on some old favourites (see here for what to expect, clear skies permitting), you are more than welcome to bring your own to use, share and if needed, seek guidance on.  Binoculars are otherwise a very good option, and can often provide the best way of spotting certain objects.  For those not familiar with the autumn constellations, a guided tour of them will be given.

The event is obviously weather dependent, so please keep an eye on the status below.  An email will also be sent to those who register.  A final update will be made at noon on the day itself.

Please keep any torches dim or red, and shone low.  Fingers crossed for clearer skies than last year, and being three weeks deeper into Autumn, packing a hot chocolate moves closer to being essential!

Where?

We've been kindly granted use of the same elevated field which offers a precious, low horizon to the south.  This is accessed via the track at the north end of The Street.
